4th April 2012: Dawes / Dawes in Session / Playlist

Featured: Dawes - Nothing Is Wrong (Indochine)

No, not The Doors. Dawes.

They may yet to have step foot on Australian shores, but burgeoning Americana quartet Dawes are guaranteed to leave as adopted sons following their inaugural visit this April.

The young LA band are steeped in the rich tradition of the Laurel Canyon sound, harking back to the glory days of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s when folk like Jackson Browne and The Eagles ruled the AM airwaves, their heart-on-sleeve imagery slathered in gorgeous melodies, and when traits like ‘sincerity’ and ‘beauty’ weren’t considered dirty words in the rock n roll lexicon.

A glance at who the band have already been cavorting with in their young lifespan will speak volumes of where Dawes are coming from: they were handpicked to be the backing band for The Band’s Robbie Robertson on his recent (and all-too-rare) solo excursion, they’ve recorded with members of Wilco, and both Benmont Tench and Jackson Browne himself appear on their sterling sophomore album Nothing Is Wrong, the long-player which came in at #35 on the US Rolling Stone’s prestigious Album Of The Year list for 2011.

But it’s the live sphere where they’re touted to be the real deal, and Australian audiences get to find out for themselves when Dawes come to the country to appear at the 2012 instalment of the East Coast Blues And Roots Festival alongside brothers-in-arms such as Justin Townes Earle, Steve Earle and My Morning Jacket, as well as heading to Boogie festival in rural Victoria.

Catch them live in session for Sideways Through Sound, April 4, on 2ser 107.3

14th March 2012: Hiss Golden Messenger / Playlist

Featured: Hiss Golden Messenger - Poor Moon (Tompkins Square)

Hiss Golden Messenger is Durham, North Carolina-based songwriter M.C. Taylor, in partnership with multi-instrumentalist and recordist Scott Hirsch, who lives in Brooklyn, New York. The pair have been playing music together for nearly two decades. 'Poor Moon' is the fourth proper Hiss Golden Messenger release, and serves as the best summation thus far of Taylor's lone journeys through the dark night of the soul. "God is good, and it's understood," he sings. "But he moves in mysterious ways."

Taylor and Hirsch are clear that they draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including the blue-collar mysticism of Ronnie Lane and Richard & Linda Thompson; the high haunted atmospheres of John Martyn and Talk Talk; and American vernacular music writ large (from Archie Brownlee to the Staple Singers; Charlie Poole to Merle Haggard). Yet for all that, 'Poor Moon' is a singular vision, one that only two companions could have made after twenty years of music-making, revelry, and repent. 'Poor Moon' sounds like nothing so much as Hiss Golden Messenger.

Taylor and Hirsch are joined on Poor Moon by regular collaborators Terry Lonergan, Nathan Bowles (Black Twig Pickers; Pelt); Hans Chew (D. Charles Speer & the Helix); Matt Cunitz (Brightblack Morning Light); Tom Heyman (The Court & Spark); visual artist Alex Jako and others. The result is a lush yet concise album, recorded in one week, that has been championed (unsolicited, we might add) with effusive praise in Interview Magazine, UNCUT, The Guardian, and NPR.

Tompkins Square will also release a limited edition 7" of "Jesus Shot Me In The Head" from 'Poor Moon' b/w the unreleased "Jesus Dub", on Record Store Day, April 21, 2012.
